Position Description: Curator for Kimberley Art & Photographic Prize
Location: Derby, WA
About Us:
The Kimberley Art Prize (KAP) has been facilitated by the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley (SDWK) since 1970, following a suggestion by the then Shire Clerk to run an annual art competition for residents of the Kimberley region.
The art prize was a non-acquisitive prize until 1978. Since then the SDWK has acquired the winner each year and now owns a substantial art collection produced by some of the most talented artists in the region.
The KAP has grown to become a highly respected art award in the Australian arts industry; being one of the most remote art competitions in Australia and one of the longest running art prizes in Western Australia.
In 2020, Kimberley Art Prize and the Kimberley Photographic Award merged after finding the Derby airport as a suitable space to hold this event. he awards are now known as the Kimberley Art and Photographic Prize.
This event during the well-known Boab Festival, with the exhibition opening for two weeks during July each year.
Since 2021, this exhibition has had over 1000 visitors each year, therefore providing a space for tourist and locals to interact and giving the visitors the opportunity to acquire the unique piece of art from Kimberley.
We are currently seeking a passionate and experienced Curator to lead the curation of our upcoming art exhibition.
Position Summary:
As the Curator for our art exhibition, you will play a pivotal role in conceptualizing, organizing, and presenting a captivating exhibition that engages and inspires our diverse audience. You will work closely with artists, stakeholders, and the exhibition team to curate an exceptional artistic experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Exhibition Conceptualization:
- Develop a clear curatorial vision and thematic framework for the exhibition.
- Ensure a diverse and inclusive representation of artists and styles.
Artwork Selection and Acquisition:
- Identify artworks from artists, galleries, and collections.
- Maintain accurate records of artworks, provenance, and condition reports.
Exhibition Design and Layout:
- Create a visually compelling and coherent layout.
- Ensure proper lighting, signage, and presentation of artworks.
- Incorporate interactive and multimedia elements to enhance visitor engagement.
Catalogue and Educational Materials:
- Contribute to the production of exhibition catalogues and educational materials.
- Contribute to the development of tours, and workshops to enhance visitor understanding.
Public Engagement:
- Engage with artists, collectors, and community stakeholders to foster relationships and gather insights.
- Collaborate with the marketing team to promote the exhibition and generate interest.
Conservation and Care:
- Oversee the handling, installation, and deinstallation of artworks, ensuring their safety and preservation.
- Implement environmental controls and security measures to protect artworks.
Qualifications:
- Valued but not necessary studies in Art, Museum Studies, or related field.
- Proven experience in curating art exhibitions, with a strong portfolio of past projects.
- Good knowledge of Kimberley art.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with artists, staff, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
Salary:
We offer a competitive salary according with experience and qualifications. The specific salary range for this position will be discussed during the interview process.
