We are honored to announce Vernon Ah Kee as a judge for the 2025 Kimberley Art and Photography Prize. A highly respected contemporary artist and activist, Ah Kee brings a powerful voice and critical perspective to this year’s panel.

Born in 1967 in Innisfail, Queensland, and of Kuku Yalandji, Waanji, Yidinji, and Gugu Yimithirr heritage, Ah Kee is known for his multidisciplinary practice spanning drawing, painting, text-based art, photography, video, and installation. His work critically examines race, identity, and Australia’s colonial history, with striking charcoal portraits and confrontational text-based pieces that challenge stereotypes and systemic racism.

As a co-founder of ProppaNOW, an Indigenous artist collective advocating for urban Aboriginal artists, Ah Kee has reshaped perceptions of Indigenous identity in contemporary art. His work has been exhibited internationally at prestigious venues, including the Tate Modern, Venice Biennale, and Istanbul Biennial, and his acclaimed video work tall man is held by the Tate, London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.

Ah Kee’s presence on the judging panel is a privilege, bringing a wealth of experience, artistic excellence, and a deep commitment to amplifying Indigenous perspectives.

Stay tuned for more updates as we celebrate the incredible talent joining KAPP 2025!
